IFFA YOUTH FILM PROGRAM
Empowering Indigenous Youth Through Storytelling & Film Education
Empowering the Next
Generation of Indigenous Filmmakers
The IFFA Youth Film Program is a story-driven initiative that supports Indigenous youth (ages 14–21) in developing the skills to tell their own stories through film. Over the program, students receive hands-on training in filmmaking—from idea to screen—while being mentored by Indigenous professionals working in the industry.
Our approach is rooted in Indigenous knowledge systems, cultural protocols, and narrative sovereignty. Each film camp ends with a showcase of student-made films that reflect the strength, creativity, and voice of our communities.

What PARTICIPANTS WILL Learn.
While the IFFA Youth Film Program teaches the foundations of filmmaking—camera work, editing, lighting, and sound—it also goes deeper. Through culturally grounded, Indigenous-led mentorship, participants will:
Explore Indigenous Storytelling
Learn how traditional teachings, oral history, and community knowledge can guide powerful story creation. Youth are encouraged to express their voices while honouring their communities' values, worldviews, and resilience.
Build Confidence & Cultural Identity
Working with Elders, mentors, and peers, youth reconnect with identity and land-based teachings, helping them feel seen, valued, and empowered to share their truths on screen.
Strengthen Teamwork & Leadership Skills
Film is a collaborative art form. Participants work together in crews, learning how to lead, support one another, and build trust through collective storytelling.
Foster Self-Esteem & Creative Expression
Completing a short film from start to finish builds a deep sense of pride and accomplishment. Youth leave the program knowing their stories matter—and that their voices can make change.
Camera & Cinematography
Learn how to frame, light, and shoot scenes that visually captivate your audience.
Story Development
Transform personal experiences into structured narratives that reflect culture and identity.
Sound & Interviewing
Learn how to ask meaningful questions and capture clear, emotionally honest audio.
Editing & Post-Production
Bring your footage to life through cutting, sequencing, and finishing techniques.
